We offer a 32 page guide "Working Safer and Smarter with power cut-off saws". Price US$10 , freight extra at cost, credit card purchases only.(we can email total invoice amount prior to sale) This guide, edition 1, is not intended to be a manual on the use of power cut-off saws, nor is it intended to be a code of practise. It is an extremely useful guide when training inexperienced operators, a refresher for experienced users, a handy format for retention with power cut-off saws in their containers, and a necessary item for distribution by hire companies and safety conscious organisations. Operators should carry one with them for reference.

It is hoped the guide will serve as a catalyst in the safer use of these hazardous saws and provide a basis for continued education by others expert in their own facet of sawing with these tools.

The guide explains important responsibilities under New Zealand safety and health laws whilst covering key areas like safety clothing and equipment, safer saw handling and special considerations. These safety laws are in essence the same everywhere, penalties vary as do some aspects of the various Acts etc but the underlying material applies and is useful as a reference for safety programmes.

SAFER DIAMOND BLADES

Diamond blades of the segmented type can be laser welded or brazed together with low melting point brazing material. Diamond Blademan favours laser welding for power cut off saws such as the Partner,Stihl, Dolmar etc

Laser welded diamond blades are assembled by melting the steel core of the blade and the lower part of the diamond segments to make a new tough composite material at the joint. This joint is very strong, certainly potentially from 50% to 100% stronger than an equivalent joint manufactured with brazing equipment.

Safety is of paramount importance for the power cut off saw operator, his co-workers, and members of the public in the general vicinity. The tougher the blade, the less likely it is to fly apart at high speed when under tough cutting conditions. Diamond segments and hunks of diamond blades travelling at very high speed can easily kill and maim at up to 30 metres or so from the saw. Anything that can be done to reduce the chance of catastrophic failure of the diamond blade should be done .ie stronger joints create potentially safer diamond blades.

Having assembled a diamond blade is one thing but to do this consistently well requires a manufacturing discipline like the I.S.O.9001. quality standard. Power cut off saw blades by Diamond Blademan are manufactured to strict I.S.O.9001 standards.

A diamond blade¹s steel core will be less stressed by a free cutting segment well matched to the job at hand. More than 25 years experience with diamond blades in new Zealand¹s widely varying conditions has enabled us time to learn how to closely match power cut off saw blades to the saw in question, the material to be cut, operator preference and budget.

A well matched diamond blade is a safer tool for the operator. Diamond Blademan has a very large range of power cut off saw diamond saw blades to choose from. All Diamond Blademan power cut off saw blades are carefully tensioned for high speed operation and tested for joint strength before being shipped to New Zealand. In addition the trained eye of a Diamond Blademan quality inspector checks each blade prior to shipment to the customer.

To ensure greater safety for Diamond Blademan customer operators, each blade is shipped with comprehensive operating information, is supported by our ³Help² line, our technically inclined website, our safety training and ³Power cut off sawing guide² developed under OSH¹s watchful eye.

Feeling tired? got a headache to go with it? feel a bit sick? been cutting concrete?

How many stories have you heard about concrete cutters keeling over and waking up in hospital, or having been dragged outside a building to fresh air and recovery. These stories are too common in New Zealand and reflect the un recorded high level of probable near misses in the construction industry.

Is it any wonder that a concrete cutter using a portable two stroke power cut-off saw gets a good whiff of CO(carbon monoxide)? After all the exhaust is very close to the operators nose!

Essentially every time a concrete cutter uses a petrol or diesel powered saw carbon monoxide poisoning is a potential threat with short and long term consequences.

You need to know about these don’t you?

The ultimate long term consequence of serious carbon monoxide poisoning is death. Death through oxygen starvation. There is a difference between the "car in the garage" type of CO poisoning and work initiated CO incident. The garage type is often accompanied by soft music, booze and other inducements!

Little known long term effects are extremely alarming, these have been shown to include personality, mood, and memory changes as well as other neuropsychiatric changes. Changes which may be irreversible. Short term effects are widespread and include headaches, nausea, tiredness, loss of clear thinking, followed by changes in heart rhythm, chest pain, and coma.

The old adage "prevention is better than cure" seems particularly appropriate. How is it achieved? The first area for change must be in the ventilation of the working environment.ie the air breathed should be not more than 25 parts per million of CO. CO meters check this level and are a smart purchase for anyone working inside with concrete cutters. Even better use electric powered saws inside or hydraulic saws with remote power plants well away from the worker, and ventilated. On occasions this is not a viable alternative, in which case breathing apparatus will be needed. Any accident of this nature will have to be advised to O.S.H.under current laws, and prosecution of the surviving operator and site management is quite likely.

Assuming that an operator or worker in the area has been poisoned immediate action is needed to prevent death or long term consequences. Ideally the worker will receive hyperbaric oxygen treatment which can reduce the half life of oxygen starvation to 20 minutes or so. If this is not available(usually only at special Dive centres such as the naval base in Auckland) 100% oxygen treatment is the next choice and will take up to 90 minutes or so. The longer period of detox may contribute to the likelihood of long term irreversible consequences.

In summary consider buying a CO meter which is able to monitor conditions.. Consider careful work practice preferably with electric or hydraulic saws, only work in known atmospheres or use breathing apparatus if in doubt. A discussion forum is available on this site.

Over twenty five years, High performance Diamond Technology Ltd's Diamond Blademan has become very aware of the poor safety record of the construction industry in New Zealand, particularly with power cut off saws.

To help prevent serious injuries and deaths with these saws, Diamond blademan has for years assisted customers with in depth seminars on safety and proper diamond saw blade use.

Now we are very pleased to announce the 32 page guide "Working Safer and Smarter with power cut-off saws". Price $10 +gst. This guide, edition 1, is not intended to be a manual on the use of power cut-off saws nor is it intended to be a code of practise. It is an extremely useful guide when training inexperienced operators, a refresher for experienced users, a handy format for retention with power cut-off saws in their containers, and a necessary item for distribution by hire companies and safety conscious organisations.

We look forward to the debate in this area of safety and to a much better safety record in the concrete sawing specialty.

Safety training is available in New Zealand at reasonable cost by arrangement with Diamond Blademan.
